[Saxophones]

Saxophones: (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone)

Members of the woodwind family combining a metal body with a cane reed which produces the sound. The Soprano being the highest pitched and the Baritone being the lowest. I have so many favorite players I'll only mention those who had the greatest influence on my playing: John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Jan Garbarek, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker. The list really could go on for pages.

In the picture from left to right are the Tenor, Baritone, Soprano, and Alto Saxophones. Notice that the Soprano has no curve (some are made with a curved bell) the Alto has a slight bend in the upper portion (called the neck), the Tenor has a slightly more pronounced curved neck, and the Baritone (with black lacquer) has the most curved neck. Straight Tenors and Altos have become easier to find in the last few years.
